The basic design of snow scooters remained unchanged throughout the 20th century. The first step towards modernization was taken in 1985 by a twenty-year-old medical student and orienteering runner, Hannu Vierikko, who sought new training methods and tools to improve physical fitness, particularly speed endurance. His experimentation included the traditional snow scooter, which he modified in various ways. In 1991, wood was replaced with steel and aluminum, and these machines are still in use today.
